Sometimes such suffering experience even isn't caused by yourself. Deleting files unexpectedly can be caused by bad application programs, many vicious viruses or your wrong operations. Especially when you access the internet, many web pages will download some executable modules which you don't know to run on your computer, some of them do file operations. So actually it is difficult for you to say your important files are safe on your computer except you turn off your computer.
